Bettie Page was the most iconic pin up girl, burlesque performer, and soft-core porn star of the 1950’s, though her real fame came in the 1980’s after she had mysteriously slipped out of the limelight (more due to her Christian values than her age).

Her dark hair, with its very characteristic bangs, and her perpetual unforced smile make her image extremely beguiling. She has attracted as much attention as Betty Boop, with countless web pages and articles about her. This official web site has attracted a staggering 626 million hits since it was established in 2000.

Bettie (sometimes miss-spelt as Betty) was naïve about the kind of work she was involved in. She hoped to break into the movies. Instead, her photos and short films of her strip-shows landed her in court to face successful accusations of obscenity. She aided her enigma by avoiding giving interviews throughout her life; which gave her a Garbo-like air of mystery. She quietly withdrew from the scene and many just assumed that she had died.

Only as Bettie-mania erupted and she became a poster girl all over again in the late 1980’s did she herself discover how much of phenomena she had become. Her newly revived religious beliefs had drawn her to devotion to Jesus that rather contradicts her own body worship and fetishism. Most of the photos that still exist of Bettie Page are copies and poor ones at that. The US Congress destroyed most of the originals. Professional photographers took few anyway. Only her Playboy set was taken professionally.

It is Bettie’s sheer beauty that shines through the immatureness of her framings to create a legend of her persona.
